madam music meets pierre bensusan

You are also known for your experimentation with electronics such as delays, distortions and volume pedals. Can you tell me some more about that?

"Through my touring, I noticed that the acoustic guitar was very intimate and was not projecting sound enough.  So I started to go into electro-acoustic guitar. I had become more aware of what was going on with electric guitaring…pick-ups and all those kinds of things.  I needed an EQ to control my sound and my frequencies, and then I found that my sound could be enhanced by a nice reverb.  Then from reverb, I went to knocking effects.. I found it was like climbing a mountain, but in the process I had a lot of fun. Unfortunately, the equipment was very heavy and so I became tired of this. One day, I spoke to my equipment and said "sorry nothing personal, but me and my acoustic are going alone", and so I went completely acoustic and even sometimes without a P.A. Now I use a laptop and I use multi-effects in the laptop. Recently,I only use very few effects, EQ and Reverb. I concentrate on the expression and the nuances rather than enhancing the sound. I don’t do loops anymore, but I find it more gratifying".

What is your top tip for guitarists wishing to develop their own style?

"To look in themselves to discover what is their intention and what they want to express; To follow their inclination and their heart; To learn how to have a very good technique and not be blindfolded by the technique. (The technique should be completely transparent);
To look to touch more than to impress and to be touched more than to be impressed; To not worry about being flash, but to really concentrate on sound; To use music to speak about their emotions. (It’s more than guitar - its outside the guitar); Not to be too obsessed by guitar speak".

2) Recordings

What’s your favourite album you have recorded and why?

"Obviously my latest record should be my favourite, but its not necessarily working this way. I believe I have musicality in my recordings and my first one was extremely innocent and spontaneous. Sometimes, I listen to it and it's not anywhere near the music I know today, but there were elements of innocence and urgency. I mean what had to be played, absolutely had to come out.

It’s very personal. It’s between me and me in fact, but if I am going to share this with people and take them as witnesses of this process, then it has to become something that can be shared. It has to belong to them as them. And so that made me think about music in general, what is music and what is my contribution - original music? I don't think I own music, but I am trying to play it in my own way. I work my sounds so that I can be identified which is important".
